Dayanand Saraswati is the last Hindu social epoch maker in the true line of the Buddha and Sankara. The rise of a Dayanand in the nineteenth century is phenomenon which baffles the historian. The present reformed and rejuvenated Hinduism is solely a gift of Dayanand Saraswati.

Dayanand Saraswati was the first great architect of modern makers India. His learning was stupendous, and his character great. Bur above all, his vision was clearer and broader than is generally given to Nation-Markers.

Dayanand has helped to make India conscious of itself as a unity with some distinctive contribution to make to the culture of the world as whole.

A rare insight into the needs of the time and a steadfastness of purpose which no adverse turn of fortune could conquer, a readiness and resourcefulness rarely met with, true patriotism which was far in advance of the times, and a sense of justice tempered with mercy, these were the sources of strength which enable Dayanand to organize a great movement like the Arya Samaj.

Dayanand preached a monotheism of an exalted type, and the union of spiritual asceticism with an elabrorate ritual and strictly defined rules of conduct for every department of life.

Dayanand was such a great man as has no equals in India.

Caesar and Alexander are know to many more than Dayanand. Yet not one of them would be worthy to touch the fringes of his garment : Neither do I think of his eloquence : Cicro and Demosthenes were more eloquent perhaps : yet how infinity superior to both, this sannyasi of Aryavarata.

Dayanand was an Acharya for he was a man of vision, a man who lived his vision.

Among the many rich legacies that Swami Dayanand has left to us, his unequivocal pronouncement against untouchability is undoubtedly one.

We have to acknowledge Dayanand Saraswati’s great merit in having given a strong impulse to Vedic studies in India.

The stagnation in which Hinduism was rotting when Swami Dayanand inaugurated the Arya Samaj (in 1875) was arrested by his great efforts and a spirit of change for the better was infused in the slumbering conscience of the Hindu community in Hindustan.

Maharishi Dayanand was great as a man, greater as a Indian, and one of the greatest as a Reformer.

Swami Dayanand’s aim can be fulfilled only by re-absorption of his reforms into Hinduism as a whole.

It is perfectly certain that India never saw a more learned Sanskrit Scholar, a deeper metaphysician, a more wonderful operator, and a more fearless denunciator of any evil, that Dayanand since the time of Sankaracharya.

To a true Hindu it will ever be a matter for reverent gratitude that the Swami preached the cult of the Vedas as the revealed word of GOD, and that he brought back nationalism to its only true and enduring basis
