Handwritten Letters of Maharshi Dayanand

Maharshi Dayanand’s correspondence is a part of history. In the letters of Maharshi Dayanand, new facts come to light at some places and old facts are confirmed at other places. It also throws light on the multidimensional personality of Maharshi Dayanand. These letters give an idea of Maharshi Dayanand’s working style and planning method. The work of compilation of these letters was done by great scholars like Swami Shraddhanand, Pandit Chamupati, Pandit Bhagavaddat, Pandit Brahmadatt Jigyasu, Shri Mamraj Khatauli and Pandit Yudhishthir Mimansak. Some handwritten letters are presented here along with typed text and translation for specimen. See the Books published by Arya Samaj for his other available letters.

My dear Baboo
I am extremely happy to read yours of the 12th inst and am over (glad) to learn the delightful intention of Mr. Shamji to visit England for three ye(ars) in my opinion this is the exampled opportunity for him (to) grasp it without fail which will prove mutually best indeed for both countrymen for their success in many ways. Your Inducement to him in this respect will be considered as first rate and he will be crowned with high honours by all educated people both in England and India for his such a praiseworthy attempt, when returned successtully. Will he take his wife with him? Why his father-in-law Seth Chhabil Dass does not coincide with and join your common opinion! Please give me further information again on this matter and I am very glad to express my best opinion this time that Mr. Shamji would not be considered a wise man if he turned his foot backward from this illustrious undertaking.’
Now I will leave Ludhiana for Lahore on 19th of April 1877 and will stop there in the garden of Ratan Chand Darhiwala. Please send all your letters to the above address till further information.

Dear Sir
I am exceedingly glad to read yours of the 30th ult. which refreshed my soul very much. Your boldness in virtuous path is beyond measure and your excutions in Indian’s welfare are unspeakable. By the laws of nature you are deserving good reward from heaven. Your prosperity will grow higher and higher rapidly.
I am willing to follow your advice, and ready to translate shukle Yajur Veda as you wish. But in this case I will need of two Pandits more and the Printing Charges will also get increases for the double issue of the work every month. Therefore you can yourself think over the matter properly and inform me then of your final opinion on the matter so that I may employ two writers more and begin to translate the work certainly, I have every reason to believe that the darkness of ignorant India-which they seem and still careless will one day be banished away, if the sun of civilization shone over and the true knowledge of Vedas, diffused over the country.
Noble and high spirited person like you and your companion only can be expected to undertake this mighty work for the public good and though such souls are few in number but their rarity is better than their abundance.
I wish that Shamji Krishna Varma should come to me for some time before starting for Oxford. I wish to give him some of the most important hints on Vedas which are necessarily required for him. He must not care for his expenses or anything else and i will furnish him with all necessities indeed. In my opinion his going to England is very useful for him but let me know what is your opinion about the matters. I will also write directly to him. I have got no copy of Maha Nirwana Tantra with me but it is procurable from Calcutta. Hoping you are well. Please let me know Shamji K. Verma’s answer about my enquiry and accept my Asheervaad

Dear Pandit,
The accompaying is a specimen of my Veda Bhashya (which is to be commenced and published soon) showing the style and mode of dividing the interpretation of the texts into peculiar ways for the facility of its readers. I will do my best to disclose all the most difficult points into plain Sanskrit and Devanagari so that even the boys of insufficient knowledge will be able to understand them without any help.
Please see it yourself first and then circulate it in Ahmedabad and Bombay etc., for approval of the people.
I hope you loose no time in doing so and will be communicating your final opinion to me either to keep the style or change into another better one.
The work of text Bhashya has been set up and is under my pen every day so the delay in answer expressive of your and others opinions like that of Moreshwar Kunte is not advisable. Address me Rawalpindi to the care of post master only. I have also given a notice on my Veda’s Bhoomika Part No. 9 for the present month regarding the two issues of Riga and Yaju from the next year 1878 for learning the subscribers wishes for their acceptance and another notice for fixing subscription etc. and as settled will be published again in the next month. Please reply my other letter too and accept my best Asheerbad. I am very glad to hear that you visit Bombay A Samaj every fortnight and deliver a beautiful lecture there on different subjects with the view of public interest. Hoping you are well and rejoicing

16th January, 1878

Dear Baboo
With the consent and united opinion of Moonshi Inder Mani (a famous learned of Arabic and Persian) and other experienced persons of N W. provinces, I feel necessity to inform you that the Veda-Bhasya must not be translated into English or Vernacular before reaching its completion, because if translated into English or Urdu then it will weaken the hearts or the people to study Sanskrit, thinking that they would be able to gain their object either by English or Urdu without caring for Sanskrit and Bhasha. Under such circumstances, we need not try to translate the work into English or Urdu, which instead of producing any good result, will bring forth something bad in the end.
Let the Bhashya first be reached its completion in pure Sanskrit and Bhasha only, afterwards, if it would be thought proper to translate into other languages, you all would get liberty to work according to your wishes with the view of public benefit in the world.
Now better bookshop to send me sample of paper selected and suggested by Mr. Sham ji Krishana Verma some time ago to be procurable at Rs. 16 per ream in Bombay. Settle the matter soon get agreement of the printers for working according to their words and mutual fixed terms, which all should be entered on the stamped paper without longer delay.
If Sham ji Krishna Verma can work for me, I am very glad to engage him in my work even on extra pay and without caring for Rs. 10 or Rs. 15 more or less in the monthly account. Ask him if he likes to do so and hold a commitee of your friends for proposing some better scheme about the Veda Bhashya’s publication if possible.
The first year ended and the 2nd is to be commenced from February, so I wish to fix subscription on receipt of your settlement with the printers etc. end tell me what subscription should be kept for both the Vedas according to their printing expense. The buyers will be unwilling to pay high subscription if the translation be added and enlarged along with the Sanskrit one.
Gujrat, Futtehgurh and Wazeerabad have been blessed with Arya samajees in December last and January 1878, Adress me Gujrat city to the care of post master only and accept my Asheerbad

PanditSundarlalRamnarayanji stay happy
Let it be known that we had sent a proofsheet from here to Bombay on 25th May, but it has not reached till date, this is the mistake of the post office and earlier too many issues of Vedbhashya have not been delivered to the subscribers. It seems that this work is done by postmen etc. and some people who are irritated with our words have misplaced by being biased, now the proof has also been destroyed like this and now we will file a complaint at the post office, what is your opinion about it? From which register of the post office we can get information regarding lost letters, proof sheet, books etc. where should the complaint be lodged?, at Bombay, Amritsar or both the places.we have suffered huge losses, how much should we lodge a complaint for and what should we plead for? Please send your reply as soon as you get the letter. A letter was sent for the accounts of Kashi, what arrangements have been made for it.

Shri Shyamji Krishna Verma, be happy.
Let it be known that we have heard that you intend to go to England to teach Sanskrit, so this idea is very good. But I had written to you earlier also and am writing to you even now that it would have been better if you had stayed with us and seen the main topics of Vedas and Shastras. Now it is advisable for you that when you go there, you should talk about what you have studied. And say that I have not read all the Vedas, but I am a small student of Aryavarta country. And there should be no such thing or work which will cause degradation of our country, because they have great desire for someone who can teach Sanskrit. Therefore, all kinds of people will come to meet and talk to you, so whatever you say among them, say it with understanding. And send the reply of this letter to us. And convey our blessings to Shri Mohanlal, VishnulalPanditji. We are in high spirit.

And should stay away from the Pastor people, and translate the letter from America into Nagari and send it. This will help in getting the work done quickly, and send the translation of the rules and regulations of Arya Samaj Bombay and Punjab to them in English. Whatever you consider appropriate to change, please change it and inform us as well. (it is crossed in the letter)

Let it be known that your letter had come from Mumbai, I got to know the situation. You must have seen the arrangements of work. And this time also Devanagari was not written on the envelope of Veda Bhashya. If someone has not studied English in the village, then how will he get the marks there and there are many people who have studied Devanagari in the villages, therefore you askBabuHarishchandraChintamaniji to hire a scribe who knows Devanagari as soon as he receive this letter, so that the work is done properly. Otherwise, get the addresses of subscribers written on the envelopes of Veda Bhashya by someone who knows Devnagari as per the register. And you go and keep an eye on what is happening there, and also get them to send you the account of the books that have been sent to the subscribers and which is in stock at their place. And tell BabuSaheb that when you send the proof of Veda, please send the title page along with it. And inform us about the news from there very soon through letter. Arya Samaj has been established in Meerut and we have come to Delhi on 3rd October. All is well here

Let it be known that a letter was sent to you on 17th January, you must have received. Today I am again writing you to quickly find out the situation there and inform me in detail whether Harishchandra has got the issue printed or not, or has kept it after printing and wants to cause harm. As per Babuji’s promise, the month of Magh is about to end, so now you take the work of Vedabhashya from him and yourself bring out the fifth issue. Write an agreement with the publishers that our work should be published on monthly basis and we will give the money in the second month and the limit in the third month. We will keep paying till then, and you need not have any doubt about the payment, we will arrange it properly. you write in detail how much the cost will be reduced by printing 1500 or 2000 copies,Babuji wrote that in printing 1500 copies the total reduction will be Rs. 100/- out of which 77 will be of paper only then nothing is reduced for printing and binding etc., find out this calculation and write it in detail. Even if you have a thousand tasks, leave them aside and write a reply of every word of this letter and send it very quickly. Here in Meerut, many affluent people wish to set up printing press, so decide and write down how much money it will cost to buy types etc.

Received Your letter and understood its meaning. It is confirmed to me that you have not known the semantic relations of any of the books from Vedas to Purvamimamsa. That is why you did not understand the meaning of the introduction created by me, which you would have understood if you had come to me and understood it. But if you want to know answers to your questions, then you can listen to Swami VishudhanandSaraswati or Bal Shastri Ji and you will understand something. [Because if they explain it to you then there is some hope that you will understand.] Well think about it, without reading those books, what is the relation between the Vedas and Brahmin books, what is there in them and the self-evident and divine revelations. Vedas and paratha pramana and Brahmin books written by Rishis and sages are the reasons why principles are proved and what are the consequences without them. Without knowing these secrets of knowledge, you can never understand them.

ShriyutPriyavar H.S. Colonel OlcottSaheb and H.P. Blavastikiji, be happy.
Namaste.
Now I am hail and hearty. Hope you guys also be fine. I came to know that you guys had gone on a trip to Lanka i.e. Ceylon. What joyful things happened there and must have returned safely. I am currently staying in Meerut. I will stay here for a month. I and all the learned people were very happy to see the way you have firmly written about the Vedas as the most holy eternal Godly, the benefactor of all, in your Nagri letter and sent it to me in Kashi. It is true that अंगीकर्तं सुक्रतिनः परिपालायंति, those who are religious learned men never abandon the religion they follow. Now the Vedic branch in the Theosophical Society which I am a part of, is also a branch of Arya Samaj and Theosophical Society. Neither Arya Samaj is a branch of Theosophical Society nor is Theosophical Society a branch of Arya Samaj; But the Vedic branch which is the reason for love for the religion of these two societies is the reason for their mutual relationship. Like I will be famous in Arya Samaj, you will definitely be famous in Theosophical Society also. It is not right to keep this thing secret. Because in future, it will always be appropriate for the members of Arya Samaj Vedic Branch and Theosophical Society to know, believe, say and make famous the same relationship as mentioned above, not otherwise. With such fame, no one will have any illusions and everyone will be happy with confidence. And what I told SenatSaheb is correct. Because I don’t consider it appropriate to show off these ridiculous things. Be it through sleight of hand or through yoga.
Because without being made to do Yoga, no one can ever understand the importance of Yoga or have true love for it; rather, being filled with doubt and surprise, they want to watch the show all day long, leaving aside all the talk of improvement and the test of the one who is putting on the show, and Do not accept its means. Like I have neither shown nor want to show to SinatSaheb, whether he is happy or angry, because if I indulge in this then all the fools and pundits will ask me to show them some wonders of Yoga, as you have shown him. Apparently, such a worldly drama would have followed me too, like the one that followed Madam HP Blavistiki. Now, they stay away from asking and accepting the things about knowledge and righteousness which can purify the souls of human beings and attain happiness. But whoever comes, asks her to show them some tricks of yoga. Due to various reasons, I neither like nor encourage these things. But if anyone wants, I can teach him the method of yoga, by following which he can attain self-realization. There is nothing better than this. I write to you with great pleasure that you have given up Christianity and other modern beliefs and have accepted the Vedas, the most sacred eternal God, and are also devoting your body, mind and money to propagate it. And I was very happy with the fact that you wrote that even if you leave the Vedas, we will not leave them. Is this a small thing? This is the result of God’s supreme grace that has definitely inspired us and you on the path revealed in the Vedas. It is not enough to thank Him. Just as He has shown mercy on us and you, let Him show the same mercy on everyone so that everyone follows the true belief and abandons the false beliefs. That everyone’s soul should be as happy as one’s own soul is. And I also want to inform you about something joyful which you will be very happy to hear. So this is a testament— Eighteen persons, including you and Blavastiki and sixteen eminent persons of Aryavarttiya Arya Samaj. I will write letter and rules and after getting it registered, will send you and allthe people soon, so that later you people can invest all my resources in charity without any kind of disturbance and my representative body will understand it.

Therefore, you people should keep this letter safely so that it will be used for great work in future. Kimdhilekhenpriyavarvidvadvichakshaneshu.

Seth Nirbhayramji, remain happy.
This letter is being written to you considering it necessary so that you can share it with everyone in the meeting. It was learned from the letter of MunshiKalicharanRamcharanji that in your school, Aryan language Sanskrit is taught very little and other languages like English or Urdu Persian are taught more. Due to this, the objective for which this school has been established does not seem to be achieved. In fact, your expenditure of thousands of rupees seems to be futile on behalf of Sanskrit. We have never seen the exam papers or the results of studies till date. You people seeing that there is a lack of Sanskrit in Aryavarta for a long time. In fact, instead of the mother tongue Sanskrit, English is becoming the mother tongue of the people. English is being promoted everywhere by the Emperor, whose mother tongue it is. Now we do not see that much need in its growth. Nor can we do anything in front of the emperor. Yes, our very ancient mother tongue, Sanskrit which has no support at present. And seeing this system, you people have established this school for the propagation of Sanskrit. So it is also a proper duty to always keep an eye on the accomplishment of the previous wish. Now for this, it should be done that out of six hours of total study time, 3 hours for Sanskrit, 2 hours for English and 1 hour for Urdu-Persian should be taught. And Sanskrit examination should be conducted every month by other scholors. And they should send the question-answer papers to us. Till now, this school has not borne any fruit in Sanskrit. Therefore, if you put into practice whatever has been written above, you can hope that your wish will be achieved. Kimdhikansugyeshu.
Nowadays, we are in such a place where the best fruit of this season i.e. mango is not available ripe or raw. How is the crop there? If there are mango fruit there, then arrange for 200-300 Mumbai mangoes or any other variety which you think is good and send them by train. But send not so ripe mangoes from there so that we get them in good condition. It will be better to send bymail train. We received a letter from the Sarpanch of the Seths of Churu at Jaipur asking me to visitthere. And it has been written that they would send chariots, horse-drawn carriages, camels etc. to the railway station of Sambhar. As of now, we have only replied to them that if there is a good rain, we will be able to leave from Ajmer. Because we are thinking of going towards Udaipur and Mewar also. If we go to Udaipur, that too will be informed to you. Perhaps I don’t need to take a ride from you to go to these two places, will writeto you when needed. Reply to the letter. Kimdhikam.

Received your letter, what you wrote is correct. If Kayasthas and artisans want mantra instruction you should preachthis mantra to them (Vishvani Dev SavitarduritaniParasuv. From the beginning I had this doubt that the politics that I know, in accordance with the Vedas, may go with my demise. Here Shri DarbarMaharanaji reads and listens to all the politics and also behaves appropriately and I am now satisfied, on knowing this my mission is successful.
